Difference between Online Exam and CBT
The term Computer Based Exam (or Computer Based Test) includes online-exam. Online-exam may be called a sub-class of Computer Based Exam, wherein the exam is conducted online. The term online is used because the computer which is being used to take the exam may be connected to the internet or intranet in a client-server environment.
The computer which is being used for taking the test can be considered as a client computer. The term server computer is used for the computer which is connected on the internet or intranet somewhere and the exam is being delivered by it.
In an online exam, there is usually some form of communication between the server and the client (not necessarily continuous). The exam results are uploaded to the server computer after the exam is over. The role of the client ends after the exam is over and the results are uploaded. In technical terms, the session ends after the exam is finished.
Now, circling back to Computer Based Exam, as we mentioned earlier, it is a generic term which is used for any kind of exam or test which takes place on a computer. It is not necessary that the computer may be online. In different words, it may or may not be connected to a server on the internet or intranet.
After the exam is given in Computer Based Exam and Computer Based Test (CBE or CBT), the result could be locally stored on the computer’s hard disk or they could be transported online on to a web server. Stand-alone testing is often called CBT.
The competitive exam is usually called Online Exams as they are conducted in real-time simultaneously over the network to several students and the exam is held in a client-server environment.
CBT Software-Exam Engine may be seen as an example for CBT. Under this, the candidate shall download the CBT software from the Internet and install it on her/his computer and use that to take the exams. No server connection is necessary for taking this quiz.
